According to James and Dave, Ed was taking a prototype amp around to all the big-name amp builders to have it cloned and sold under his name. The amp Ed was demo'ing around was a "Jose modded Marshall" built by the late Jose Arredondo.
While James says he never saw (or heard) this amp, Dave did. Reamping is a process by which you record ‘dry’ tracks that a mix engineer can run back through amps and are mic’d up and captured in the usual way. James also talks about seeing and playing thru Ed's precious 12301 amp, and that it was a stock amp. The ‘dry’ track is a clean, unaffected track recorded direct from a guitar through a DI box. A DI box converts the unbalanced, Hi-Z signal of your guitar or bass to a balanced, microphone. " Ed's trick for recording with this amp was to turn the amp all the way up and play it thru one cabinet, then EQ the tone at the mixing board and cut the mids, and boost the bass a little bit (after it was miked up).
